There is something scary in just reading about attempts to climb the North face of the Eiger. It is unforgiving, unpredictable, prone to falling rocks and the odd avalanche. It is an extremely difficult climb and very, very risky - perhaps the Alps equivalent to K2. Jack Olsen's book is fascinating, scary, and makes you wonder why any climber would even thing about attempting it. Climbers have to bivouac overnight standing up which gives you an idea how steep large sections of the face are.In the 30's there was a drive by German climbers to become the first to summit the North Face. This attempt and some others by German/Swiss climbers did not end well! If you have any interest in climbing and books on climbing the. Olsen's book will fascinate you, haunt you and put you on the wall itself. I have many climbing books, particularly on the Himalaya and Karakorum mountain ranges but this book is up there with the best of them. Compelling.
